辺縁系は爬虫類などにも備わっている脳の機構で、人間にとっても進化の過程の非常に古い時から何らかの重要な役割を果たしてきたと考えられる。
その重要な役割とは、生きて必ず死ななければならない動物にとって、最も大切な役割、つまり、死ぬ瞬間に、死ぬ時の恐怖や痛みを脳に意識させないようにし、楽しさや幸福感を一杯に感じるようにする機能、そういう役割なのかもしれない。
